Names on Check
The Vermont Department of Taxes issues the refund check to the name or names on the return. A jointly filed return generates a refund check issued to both names. If you file a joint return, the refund check will be issued to both names. Some banks will cash the check upon presentation of a death certificate. If you cannot cash the check, send the check and a copy of the death certification to the Vermont Department of Taxes to have the check reissued.
Address on Check
The Vermont Department of Taxes uses the address entered on the return. With an incorrect address or no forwarding order, the refund check is sent back to the Department. The Department holds the check for up to a year to allow you to contact the Department with a correct address. After a year, the check becomes abandoned property and is transferred to the State Treasurer's Office. The State Treasurer's Office regularly publishes a list of abandoned property.
