You only need to file an amended tax return if the original return that was accepted by the IRS and/or State needs to be changed.
Example # 1: You filed your 1040 to the IRS and it was accepted. The next week you receive another W-2 in the mail. The only way for you to update the originally accepted 1040 with the IRS is to AMEND that tax return and add the income.
Example # 2: You filed your 1040 to the IRS claiming yourself as an exemption and that return was accepted. You later find that your parents were needing to claim you as a dependent on their tax return. The only way for them to be able to claim your exemption now is if you AMEND your return and choose not to claim your self exemption.
1. Only Tax Year 2022, 2023 and 2024 1040 and 1040-SR returns can be amended electronically at this time. Amended Returns for any other tax years or tax types must be filed by paper. if the original return was e-filed, in most cases you can e-file the amended return as well for Federal.
2. If amending a prior year return, and the Original return for that year was filed on paper during the current processing year, then the amended return must be filed by paper
Generally, to claim a refund, you must file Form 1040-X within 3 years after the date you filed your original return or within 2 years after the date you paid the tax, whichever is later. Returns filed before the due date (without regard to extensions) are considered filed on the due date, and withholding is deemed to be tax paid on the due date. Special rules apply for refund claims relating to net operating losses, foreign tax credits, bad debts, and other issues. For more information, refer to the Instructions for Form 1040-X (PDF)
Amended returns must be filed by paper for the following reasons:
Any amended Form 1040 and 1040-SR returns older than three years, or Form 1040-NR and 1040-SS/PR returns older than the current year cannot be amended electronically. Amended returns for any other tax years or tax forms must be filed by paper.
If amending a prior year return originally filed on paper, then the amended return must also be filed on paper.
Filers can electronically file up to three amended returns. If you file a third amended return that is accepted, all subsequent attempts will be rejected.
The current processing time is more than 20 weeks for both paper and electronically filed amended returns.See the IRS operations page for more information about processing timeframes.
Additionally, calling the IRS will not speed up return processing. Their phone and walk-in representatives can only research the status of your amended return 20 weeks or more after youve mailed it; or if Wheres My Amended Return? itself has directed you to contact the IRS.
The Wheres My Amended Return? online tool can be used to check the status of your return and confirm receipt. ftax will have no information on the processing of your amended tax return. You may contact the IRS via the link above or call them at (800)-829-1040 to check on the processing of your amended return if beyond 20 weeks. The IRS processes amended returns as quickly as possible however it may take 20 weeks for that amended return to be processed.
Direct deposit cant be requested for amended returns. However, there are certain exceptions when a direct deposit may be issued on a Form 1040-X; for example, if there was a math error on your original return.
To amend your State tax return with ftax log into your account and go to that tax year. Look under the state summary for the link to amend the return. If you are also amending the federal return, that should be completed first.
